The former US president’s most recent ultimatum to impose an extra full import duty on products from China has been labeled a “typical example” of United States’ contradictory behavior, as stated by the China’s leadership.

A official from China’s Commerce Ministry additionally remarked that China could enact its own unrevealed “responsive actions” if the White House occupant carries out his threat, emphasizing that the country was “fearless” of a potential commercial battle.

This past Friday, Donald Trump responded at the Chinese government’s action to tighten its regulations for overseas sales of critical elements, accusing Beijing of “turning aggressive” and attempting to hold the world “under its control”.

Furthermore, he vowed to pull out of a planned meeting with Beijing’s head of state President Xi, which was set for a summit in Seoul in the coming weeks.

His statements on that day shook stock exchanges, with the S&P 500 share index dropping over two and a half percent, marking its biggest drop since earlier this year.

These statements reignited apprehensions of a commercial dispute between the United States and China.

This past spring, the respective governments had consented to eliminate high import duties on each other’s products, which had created the possibility of commerce ceasing between the two nations.

As a result, US tariffs on Chinese goods subject to an extra 30% levy compared with the year’s onset, while American products entering China are subject to a ten percent duty.

The most recent comments from China – issued by the relevant government department in the format of formal replies to press queries – reflected language from the height of the ongoing trade dispute.

Officials denounced US export restrictions on chips and semi-conductors while supporting China’s own overseas sale regulations on key elements as “standard procedures” to ensure domestic safety and that of the global community.

The official stated that for “many years”, the US had “broadened the definition” of national security, exploited overseas sale restrictions and “implemented” unfair treatments against the Chinese nation.

“Using” tariff threats is not the correct approach to interact with Beijing,” their representative said.

“China’s position on a tariff war has consistently been unchanging: we wish to avoid one, but we are fearless of one.”

Recently, China announced it was tightening foreign shipment restrictions on rare earth minerals and further resources critical for high-technology production.

This move was regarded as a important measure, as the country refines about ninety percent of the global rare earth supply, which are used in items such as solar panels and handheld devices.

Latest statements from the US and China are being viewed by analysts as a strategy of bolstering negotiating stances ahead of forthcoming discussions.

It is unclear whether a talks between Trump and China’s leader, planned at a summit in South Korea before month’s end, will take place as planned.
