Department of Justice Enters Lawsuit to Halt the State of California's Congressional Map
The US Justice Department have officially joined a lawsuit brought forward by California Republicans, seeking to halt the California's recently passed electoral boundaries.
This court case, submitted to a US district court, targets the redistricting plan supported by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was created in response to a Republican-led gerrymander in Texas.
"California's redistricting scheme constitutes a brazen power grab that tramples on civil rights and undermines the electoral system," declared the US attorney general.
The Democratic party have voiced assurance that the new maps will survive court challenges.
"These opponents lost at the ballot box and they are likely to also lose in court," commented a spokesperson for Governor Newsom.
Constitutional Challenge
The lawsuit claims that California's map improperly used race as a factor to significantly advantage Hispanic voters in contravention of the federal constitution.
"It is unconstitutional to use race as a proxy to advance political interests, but that is precisely what the state legislature did with Proposition 50," stated a senior official from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
Broader Implications
The legal battle represents the most significant counterpunch by Democrats in the ongoing political battle that began in Texas and has spread across various parts of the country.
In contrast to elsewhere, where Republican state legislatures have enacted gerrymanders, California's plan required public consent, which it obtained with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
National Implications
The Democratic party need to flip just a handful of GOP-controlled House seats to take control of the House of Representatives in next year's midterm election.
The party that holds the controlling share will shape the remaining period of the current administration, determining whether a GOP-controlled legislature will persist in implementing its political program or encounter opposition, congressional probes and possible additional obstacles.
