"When are you chatting with Haim?" a text reads. "I wanted to ask if I can join as their extra sister."

However, there remains a key snag: I also wants to be Haim's additional sibling. And we're in plentiful company. A host of celebrated fans have publicly begged for the position.

One thing is obvious an irresistible appeal is at play. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana started their musical journey playing gigs at local delicatessens with their parents. Today, they are multiple Grammy contenders.

In the tradition of the greatest groups, they're a inseparable unit. Their visuals repeatedly depict them walking in sync down the streets of Los Angeles. In concert, they perform with such pure happiness you can't help but think, "I'd love to be involved in that, too."

"How often on tour that fans came up to us and said, 'After your show, I got a drum kit'," remarks Alana, the most junior of the trio. "That is the biggest honour. That is recognition in itself. Our mission is accomplished if we can encourage people to make music."

"So all gets an invitation to be the fourth Haim sister."

Award Nod

The group are connecting from a break, where they're resting up after an lengthy tour in promoting their fourth album, I Quit.

They're right now reeling from the news it's been nominated for best rock album at the Grammys – with Haim the very first all-woman band ever in the running for the prize.

"I watch the announcements every year, so it almost feels like The Truman Show when your name is called," says Alana. "I needed to phone my sisters to say, 'Did we just hear this correctly or am I imagining things'?"

The weight of the accolade is deeply felt by the trio.

"We deliberately set out to make a rock album this time, so it's a significant milestone," says Alana. "But we're just appreciative for the female artists that came before us."

Emotional Upheaval and Laughter

The project emerged from a time of transition. All three sisters found themselves single, and the music captures that strange transitional period where you're glad to be free, but not yet ready to start anew.

The words detail breakups and farewells. The sisters desire love, but not the kind of love they've got. You can hear them working out in real time who they aspire to be.

"I love summary, yes," responds Danielle. "I Quit is like a slogan. You have to consciously practice shutting out the noise and saying, 'I don't give what people think'."

Refinement of Style

That recent toughness required a fresh approach – more organic and immediate than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who co-produced the album, that was founded on the drum sound.

"The drum sound is such a detailed thing, and I focus so intensely about it," she emphasizes.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the title of our book," quips Alana. "I've said it, our albums don't start until we find the right drum sound."

Stories and Shared Laughter

The band's honesty shaped the album's promotional campaign, where the sisters disclosed some of their romantic horror stories.

One man broke up with Este over a medical concern. Alana recalled a story of travelling to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a casual gesture at midnight.

"Experiencing these heartbreaks, you just feel like there's no hope," says Alana. "Therefore to be able to find humor in those stories and have them tell you even crazier stories, it's so amazing."

A Secure Future

It's not difficult sense a evolution in the band. Now, Haim are more confident of their place in the music world.

They're top-billed acts, with successful albums and an global following.

Yet the sister act will forever be their number one commitment.

"We have been making music since I was a young child," concludes Alana. "It feels as if nothing else that we were supposed to do. And I'm really fortunate we've made it and we're still going strong."
