No fewer than 13 passengers perish and ninety-eight injured in rail accident in the nation of Mexico.
A fatal train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the speed and management of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.
The accident happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a route developed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.
“We shall meticulously determine the reasons behind this incident,” affirmed the national leader.
The leader announced that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The leader noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.
Major Initiative of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose presidency finished the previous year. This venture was intimately linked to his leadership's developmental vision for the southern region.
Another massive railway undertaking from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to kickstart the economy of a relatively poorer part of the country.
Project Execution and Safety Concerns
The development of both railway systems was supervised by the armed forces, marking a notable increase of its role in national projects. They were built at an accelerated rate, surpassing expectations to be at least partly launched before the end of that administration.
However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously fueled persistent apprehensions over construction quality.
- Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This includes an prior accident this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced several non-fatal derailments.
Calls for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the disaster, the leader of a key rival party called for an urgent pause in the building and running of all similar projects.
This halt was suggested while awaiting a full independent investigation. The party declared that the loss of life "demands swift accountability."
In reply, the head of state insisted that the train had been operating in total adherence to all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the construction and running of these vital projects.
