Space Traveler Reveals Emotional Distress Following ‘Tsunami of Online Abuse Following Journey
A Vietnamese-American astronaut has publicly detailed her emotional downturn after enduring a relentless barrage of criticism in the aftermath of a landmark journey to the edge of space.
Amanda Nguyen – celebrated as a researcher and activist – was part of the brief journey to space in April, which also included high-profile passengers.
The much-publicized journey was heavily criticized by some, who cited its expense and environmental footprint.
Reflecting on the experience, the astronaut, who was celebrated as the pioneer for her community, stated the vicious response eclipsed her moment under an “avalanche of misogyny”.
“I said the emotional pain might endure for years,” the astronaut shared in a public message, referring to a check-in call from a fellow crew member in the aftermath of the landing.
She described the news reports and online discourse as an “onslaught no human brain has evolved to endure”.
“Stuck in Texas, I spent a week unable to rise from my bed,” she revealed. “A month later… I had to hang up… because I could not speak through my tears.”
Buried Under Misogyny
The researcher, who has conducted studies in gynecological science and conducted tests during the flight, said all her lifelong efforts – from her scientific research and extensive preparation to the historic significance of her heritage – was overshadowed under the tide of sexist vitriol.
She is widely recognized for her tireless campaigning fighting for justice for victims of sexual violence.
Her own goal of reaching space was deferred after surviving a rape during her time as a student, leading to a long campaign for accountability.
Finding Solid Ground
In the time since fulfilling her dream, she noted the “fog of grief has started to lift”, and she expressed gratitude the supporters whose support helped save her. “You all saved me,” she said.
She added that amid the criticism, important benefits had come out of the experience, such as increased focus on her scientific work and chances to influence leaders.
About the Mission
The fully automated spacecraft departed its launch site in April, carrying the all-female team on a 11-minute journey that passed the Kármán line of outer space.
The group of women also comprised accomplished professionals from multiple disciplines.
The venture behind the mission is a private space firm established by a prominent billionaire entrepreneur.
