In a notable development ahead of the upcoming national polls, two high-profile figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition emerges in the aftermath of large-scale and deadly young people's protests that shook the country earlier this year and eventually led to the removal of the sitting government.

A Commitment to Address Young People's Concerns

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly pledged to focus on the grievances highlighted by the new generation. This promise follows the violent anti-corruption unrest that occurred in September, which resulted in significant loss of life.

"Agreement must not be what a leader wants, it must be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane after the agreement was signed.

The late summer uprising was sparked by widespread frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a spark for deeper discontent stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and persistent allegations of systemic political corruption.

Details of the New Political Partnership

According to the official pact, the positions for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

• Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old TV host, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread discontent with the country's established political class. He has in the past served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
• Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key player in Nepal's current political transition. He played a role in setting up the interim government that came to power after the previous administration was dissolved.

Broader Government Consultations Taking Place

In a separate development, the sitting interim prime minister recently conducted consultations with several leading political leaders. These talks involved ex- prime ministers and the presidents of rival major parties, marking the first such dialogue since the time of the uprising.

After these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that holding a credible election is a collective duty. The message reiterated the government's dedication to ensuring a safe and open atmosphere for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
