Weather Balloons Utilized to Illegally Transport Cigarettes Closed Airport in Lithuania
Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was forced to close for hours when dozens of them entered the airspace of Lithuania.
Flight Disruptions
The temporary shutdown led to 30 flight cancellations affecting thousands of passengers, with officials warning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Border security stated that multiple atmospheric balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the airport's airspace.
As many as 14 of the atmospheric instruments sent during the weekend floated over the metropolitan zone, which is the location of Lithuania's capital city and close to the border with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
At least 11 balloons containing 18,000 packs of illegal tobacco products have since been recovered, though this number could rise, according to law enforcement authorities.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Although causing problems, officials emphasized that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are not unusual in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
Since January, 544 balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been noted during the prior year.
Cross-Border Effects
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has documented over numerous instances in which smuggled items were delivered from its neighbor using the balloons.
Illegal Transport Methods
Regarding inquiries concerning why smugglers utilize a method that is particularly vulnerable to weather conditions rather than more controllable drones, officials clarified that "Atmospheric equipment are simple mechanisms used by smugglers - they are less expensive than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Representatives further stated that "Our services' aim is to confiscate the maximum possible volumes of smuggled items and to detain organisers and participants so that these practices become economically unsustainable and create minimal risk to passenger aircraft."
European Tensions
Such border infiltrations occur during an era marked by increased concerns in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have created aviation problems across the region.
Recent incidents in adjacent nations have led European authorities to fast-track conversations about enhancing aerial security throughout European airspace.
